SSA 113th Annual Exhibition

Society of Scottish Artists – 113th Annual Open Exhibition The Society of Scottish Artists (SSA) was founded in 1891 as the liberal movement within the visual arts of Scotland. Proudly democratic, this radical society has been recognised as the central focus of contemporary art in Scotland ever since. It has been said that there is scarcely an artist of note in Scotland whose work has not first been seen in the SSA annual exhibition. Every year the more adventurous spirits in Scottish art, the work of younger artists and those concerned with the changing ideas of contemporary art are exhibited. Openness to the inventive nature of artists and their new ideas is the aim of the organisation. Figurative art, narrative or imagist art, landscape and symbolic abstraction are shown next to multi-media and interactive art. This year’s exhibition will also feature the work of several internationally known Polish Printmakers from Wroclaw, who work in traditional printmaking techniques.

RSW 130th Annual Exhibition

The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour – 130th Annual Exhibition Open to any artist painting in the medium of watercolour, this dynamic and colourful celebration of watercolour painting features work by over 120 emerging and leading painters from across the country. The cover of the catalogue this year features Songbirds for the Procession by Jean B. Martin RSW. She works with watercolour and mixed media, layering and building up the surface of the painting, then scraping back, allowing the watercolour to reveal itself, giving glimpses of past colours and past marks. Each year the Society encourages artists by presenting a range of awards, including the £3,000 Alexander Graham Munro Travel Award for the best work by an exhibitor under the age of 30, an Exhibition Award sponsored by the Riverside Gallery, Stonehaven, the Rendezvous Gallery Residency Award and a Materials Award sponsored by the renowned art materials supplier, Winsor & Newton.
